Yume 2kki custom wallpaper thread

So in Yume 2kki you can load a custom wallpaper to the computer in Urotsuki's room.
There's already a "default" custom wallpaper in the main directory of the game named pc_back.png.
It's the one with a geisha on it.

This file can be replaced by a 256-color PNG, BMP, or XYZ format image of the player's choice, ideally 320x240 pixels in dimension.

Just felt like posting this here...

This thing has been rotting on my hardrive since 2013, so I tought of dumping it here since I don't have any motivation to work on this and also too lazy to relearn stuff from an ancient outdated version of Game Maker.

It's an unfinished crappy Doraemon Kart fangame I made which features Madotsuki as a guest racer along with a cup race featuring some tracks based from some maps in Yume Nikki (Dream Cup).

This was made using TheSnidr's Mario Kart engine in Game Maker 8. I mostly focused more on working on the characters and Yume Nikki stuff so the menu graphics were left untouched. Then life shenanigans happened and I ended up forgetting about this until recently saw Earthium's Yume Kart game.

So I'm posting this here so that all my mediocre efforts back then won't go to waste, and to also finally part ways with this thing so that I can move on with my life.

Elysium City

After some thinking, I decided to start a thread for my game "Elysium City". Though I actually started making this game less than a week ago, I've been planning on making something like this well before I even knew about YN fangames.

Anyways, You play as a girl named Anne who is an inventor and also a squatter, which means that her current residence is an abandoned house. In her backyard she managed to invent a machine that allows her to teleport to a different land. The place she arrives to is a city where none of the buildings lead you to different worlds.

While I want this game to have a dream-like feel to it, I'm going to have it focus a lot on urban exploration/decay. I will post more details of the game later.

Effects have a wide range of possibilities now - to build rooms you need to get to public dream worlds and poke around for a bit to find "room effects", basically tilesets. room owners can also hand out their own room effects, if they feel like it.

every room has an owner, and each room is connected to each other neocities-style. more visits = more effects potentally spawning in your room = more win

and some regular effects too, cosmetic effects are just cosmetics idk.

1) Make sure you have Japanese language installed on your system - what the hell are you doing in /fg/ without that anyway?..
In case you're still here w/out it:
But you most probably have it already.

2) Install Applocale - it works both for XP and Win7.
There is also a patch and some register keys on the same page, install'em all. Well, when you read that page, it's all pretty obvious.

3) Install Japanese RTP with Applocale - if you've installed all the stuff for AppLoc from the step above, you have to just right-click the RTP installer and click "Locale Japanese". DO NOT LAUNCH IT WITHOUT APPLOCALE.

4) Install 7-Zip
This is critical to success! WinRar won't do, it messes up Japanese chars regardless of locale. Most of the time.

5) Run 7-Zip with Applocale - right-click on 7zFM.exe, choose "Locale Japanese". YOU HAVE TO MAKE IT JAPANESE LOCALED EVERY TIME YOU LAUNCH 7-ZIP!

Recently played Azusa 999. It's an rpgmaker game from 1997 and in a lot of ways a precursor to Yume Nikki. It's interesting to check out. I would say it's closer to games like Ib than Yume Nikki, but a lot of the themes and ideas are similar (another world that is sparse and unpopulated, non-human creatures, trauma around violence/bullying/suicide/depression/isolation, etc)

Trying to Remember Some Weird YN Creepypasta Fangame

I've been trying to remember some old YN fangame from years ago but I can't think of the name of it. It was really unusual and creepy.

Basically the protag of the game was, like, some shadow girl, and she had this other normal looking blue room. Instead of dreaming in her bed, she used a music box, but here's where things get weird.

Apparently the game would crash and upload some kind of virus onto your computer if you tried to listen to the music box. The virus would delete and replace saved images with pictures of the shadow girl with a red background. I remember somebody however managed to fix the game so that the virus wouldn't run when you went to the music box, but after that was done, it was found out that going up to the music box and listening to it transported the girl to either an endlessly looping black world, or an endlessly looping red world depending on some variable, with no means of "waking up".

Does anyone know what game I'm talking about is? And just what was the deal with it? Was it some weird attempt at creepypasta? Some weird troll game?

Greetings + Planned Yume 2kki commentary channel

Just thought I'd introduce myself to the Yume Nikki community and let everyone know that I'm planning to start up a Youtube channel mainly dedicated to Yume 2kki, though I might cover some other fangames on it as well. The reason is because I feel like 2kki has gone more under the radar within the last few years, and I'm hoping to try and revive interest in the game through my own personal commentary on its many aspects such as maps, events, NPCs, etc.

I also want to make videos focused on 2kki's OST, because I think the soundtrack for 2kki is VASTLY underappreciated. There's so much good music in the game that gets unnoticed, it honestly makes me upset. Amihailu in Dreamland

Hey everyone, I'm back with a new game! It's Amihailu in Dreamland. It's a fangame (in the sense that you're playing a game that takes place, ostensibly, in a dream, with disjointed area continuity, etc.) I'm making in RPG Maker VX Ace. As of this writing, I'm already up to 0.01. I held off on releasing to Uboachan because we get too many projects here that do not ever get released (though it's much, much worse on tumblr).

Here's a brief summary of this game and my goals with it:
-You play as Amihailu
-You can't leave the dream world and enter at will like in many other fangames
-Many decisions you make will affect the narrative and events in large or small ways
-More event- and puzzle-based than some previous games (Hell Diary included)
-There are no effects in this game, and many of the items are intended to be optional (of course, there's not really a chance to pass them up implemented as of this writing.)

Stock assets for a newbie project?

Ever since I got RPG Maker and started making game prototypes with it, I've wanted to make my own YN fangame. But I'm not good at making tilesets, so I've stuck to using default assets so far. Would it be okay to use them as placeholders for a beginner project and replace them with original work later, or should I refrain from using default assets altogether?

I don't understand why files/picture are missing, i have downloaded different version (eng) and its always like that. I managed to go to the sleeping world but its the same in it, the map texure are missing, only some items appear. Can someone help me ?

Western 2kki

TL;DR: pic related.

I've been thinking about the much reviled "western 2kki" lately, and I've come up with an idea for a process that may allow for a game like this to be made. This thread isn't for starting such a game, but for review, criticism and suggestions concerning these ideas.

The process goes a bit like this:

1 - I (or any one organizer) makes a thread where people can send submissions for in-game maps that they made themselves.

2 - One week later, a new thread is made, where a small RPGM game is posted. This one-week period will be called a "phase" hereafter. The game consists of a Nexus which connects to each individual map that has been submitted through numbered doors. The thread's OP also contains a strawpoll for voting on which map do players think is the best. The one with the best score wins. It also contains another call for map submissions.

3 - Repeat step 2 for 4 phases, then go to step 4.

4 - The winners of the last 4 phases (now refered to as devs) get together in an online chat like a Discord server or IRC, and put the winning maps together in order to create a playable game. See pic related, fig. 1, for an example of what this would be like after 4 phases and fig. 2 for what the same project would look like after 8 phases. Noticed how nothing from fig. 1 is changed. What has already been released cannot be changed.

These devs have a deadline of 2 phases to do this, after which an official release is posted in the appropriate thread. The chat is managed by the organizer, who has no input in the actual conversations taking place.

5 - Repeat step 3 ad infinitum.

That's a rough outline of how the whole thing works. Here are some extra details, specifications and thoughts that are relevant:

- Communication between the organizer and the devs prior to the group chat meetup are done via email, so devs must actively check their emails otherwise they won't participate in the development process and their maps won't be added in, which renders their efforts moot without penalizing the other winners. The chat logs may also be released publicly to ensure that the organizer had no influence on the final decision.

- Who the organizer is is flexible; any one organizer may step down and leave room for someone else to pick up the project where it left off.

- There are no limitations on how big a map can be or how many submaps it can have. The voters will have to decide whether or not they want your 15 hours monolithic block of teleport mazes to be added to the game.

- Maps may contain effects or even a specific player character spritesheet to be used inside the map.

- If a submitted map has multiple connections, it may connect back to the Nexus via either a one-way or a two-way warp (Nexus door) at the submitter's request. It may also leave one or many connections empty, which would then be blocked off by a traffic cone 2kki-style.

- More global game elements such as the Nexus or the protagonist's design are problematic since they can't simply be integrated into existing maps. I've had some ideas for those things:

* Hold a democratic vote based on people's submissions as is done with maps at the beginning of the project. This is my prefered approach for the protagonist's design, since having the power to change something as important and memorable very early on would be a huge incentive for participation. I also think that this power is very much deserved; it's a way to say "thank you" for being a pioneer and contributing to the project when it's most vulnerable to failure.

* Have the organizer decide based on ideas, suggestions and contributions from the threads during the first few phases.

* Have it somehow be flexible between each iteration of the game. I have no idea how this could work, but that's what this thread is for!

- For the voting process, you can only vote for one map, which gives it +1 point. Every map starts at 0 points and the one with the best score wins. No map can win if they are below a pre-determined threshold (which will likely be based on the results of previous phases). This is in order to prevent shit maps that don't meet the threshold from getting in.

- The first phases could be extended to 2 weeks or more to give people more time since they'll likely be starting their maps from scratch. This would add one more incentive to get people to participate early on, when the project is most prone to failure.

This is a fangame im working on. It stars Angelica, a cute yet strong girl. The main focus of this game, aside from collecting effects, is defeating bosses. Yup, this YNFG will have battles. I'm only going to add boss battles, saving the rest of the game for npcs and such. As of right now, all I've done is a mockup of the title screen (image) and a character sprite, which is on my other pc which i dont have with me right now, so i'll probably show that tonight. .flow Sabitsuki's Bedroom

I'm having an issue that when I'm running the latest english version of .flow with EasyRPGPlayer, a lot of the files are missing, causing Sabitsuki's room to look like a blank white space with a few gray tiles and a chair. When I try to run it without the use of EasyRPGPlayer, it crashes before I get to Sabitsuki's room. The instructions are missing as well. Any fixes?

Cancelled horror farm simulator.... thing

Okay, maybe this is some horribly mangled composite memory… but I remember seeing screenshots of a game that was supposed to be a cross between a survival horror game and a farm simulator. It was 2D and top-down as far as I remember, but it didn't have the 16-bit graphics of your typical YN fangame. The devs said it started out as a YN fangame, but wasn't anymore. Several screenshots were put out and it looked really atmospheric and unique, but it was cancelled.

I don't know if a demo or anything more substantial than just those screenshots was ever put out, but I just want to see those screenshots again or at least find out what that game was called or have some closure of knowing that I'm not just making this up… like I said, this could be a horribly mangled composite memory, so take any and every detail with a massive grain of salt, but if ANY of this sounds at all familiar, please let me know.

Red Black World

Hey Guys, i've been having the strongest itch to explore through a particular world in Yume 2kki called: Red Black World. The reason why I want to see it is because I've read in the wiki that it uses the Kikai004 theme that plays in areas like in Guts World, Onyx Tile World, and Aojiru's room, and it is my favourite theme in the entire game, but for the life of me I cannot find the right version of the game that has it available in the Nexus. I am currently running in Version 0.104e, but I have played older versions of the game, but every version I have played, I haven't been able to access it. Does anyone here have a version available where I can access this place?

Seeing the nice litle activity /fg/ is having, i figure i would point out something a lot of people overlook when theorizing about .flow.

What the fuck does the beginning mean?

I mean the sequence at the start where Sabitsuki is just hovering around in a black void.
When you press Z to continue, the static goes haywire, and the most interesting thing is, the visual effect that appears on the screen when you wake up is used to introduce you to Sabitsuki's Room.

Considering the already weak line between reality and dream .flow has (after collecting all effects you have to dream 3 times in a row (1 time inside your own dream) to begin the last part of the game) the intro sequence screws it even further.

Oh, and when you press Z and when the static is going haywire, Sabitsuki's model shortly changes to a sorta monochrome black haired girl.

Also, i wonder how .flow would play out if it relied less on gore and more on the technological / psychological factor, i really think the game is perfect as it is, just wondering.

What the fuck happened to fangames in general?

Back when Yume 2kki and .flow were released and continuously updated (2kki will die soon, lol moved on to other stuff) they were very clearly "Yume Nikki fangames".

They had pratically the same style of gameplay (with some fringe cases in some areas or events like the abandoned streets in .flow) and never shied away their influence.
They had a unique aspect about them most of the time, but they still had some similiar gameplay.

Now we have fangames literally based off other fangames (can i even call them that?), stuff like Hell Diary.
I was ranting about this with a friend and he said:

"most people just make plain "horror" games now, walking sims with artsy baitsy aspects"

I guess he was sort of right, not that i hate today's lack of actual fangames, or do i hate today's "fangames" that are actually thinly veiled "horror" games that literally have almost nothing to do with Yume Nikki no sigo porque hablar Inglés es muy difícil putos trolls que violáron el mado check y dubs.

Tsunagari is a tiling game engine inspired by the cult classic game Yume Nikki. It is intended as an open source alternative to the popular proprietary RPGMaker game development suite that the original and most fangames were/are written on. The initial focus is support for all of the features of Yume Nikki, and beyond that it strives to become a fully-featured 2D game development suite. Tsunagari is written in C++, using the Gosu framework.

Tsunagari will be a comprehensive game design suite for singleplayer 2D games. The engine will support several styles, such as roguelikes, and old console-style RPGs. Multiplayer support is planned for the second stable release. Tsunagari allows Python scripting for the event system, and for additional custom functionality. As a suite, Tsunagari aims to allow as much game variation as possible without direct modifications to the engine source code. Game design will require manual file editing during the Alpha and Beta phases, but a game editor suite will be shipped with the first major release.

Does this .flow exist?

I remember triggering an event in .flow about a year ago, but I don't see it on the wiki, or the place it happened on the map sections of the wiki. It went like this-

I managed to get to a part of the game where it was brick walls, sort of like a back street, or alleyways, and there were people that looked like fat men wearing coats.
They were different colors I think, like two? There were also girls in a red dress with long black hair, like the ones you see in other sections of the game. Reminded me of prostitution
I eventually ran across a door I couldn't interact with, so I left it. As I explored, I found a street that looped, but each time it got darker and darker, and it eventually took me to a room where there was traffic cones, blood, and one of those coat people lying on the far left side
I think I remember something about this room normally being blocked off by a maid. I went over and examined the hooded guy, but nothing happened. I went to leave, and as I was nearing the door, the thing got up and zoomed at me, and my screen went black. I was then transported to a maze looking thing, with a ton of those hooded people slowly coming after me. the ghost effect didn't work on them. I saw a door, and i got to it easily.
when I entered it, the screen cut to black and you could hear Sabitsuki walking slowly, and when they exited the door I saw earlier, she was slightly bloody and with her rusty pipe equipped.

Feel like I'm going partially blind because I swear I had read about it before, but I see nothing on the wiki. My friend also was there to witness this.

Does anyone remember this and have a way to get to it?

For which fangame does it hurt the most to see it dead?

If you were given the chance to ‘revive’ one or two YNFGs that are abandoned/canceled/stuck in development limbo and immediately play a polished complete version of it, which would you pick? While there are many unfinished YNFGs that I greatly enjoyed like Answered Prayers and Broken Bottles, the game I found myself yearning for the most was Elysium City. I know its status as a fangame is highly arguable, but there was something special about seeing a game that combines the beautiful atmosphere of a top tier YNFG with an actual plot with its own unique cast of characters.
And what about you, which game would you love to bring back from the dead?

Glitches in .flow

All the .flow glitches. Proof .flow is way more broken then Yume Nikki.

Using menus in chair: Enter the chair. Hold down shift in the process of entering.

Lock menus to only be able to be used in chair (chair storage): Use instructions in chair.

Speed glitch: Use broom in chair.

Broom speed without broom: Wake up in the chair. Enter back into the dream and activate the invisible chair that will be at the desk.

Walk through walls: Use iron pipe in chair. Activate it right after you leave chair. Entering any of the four nexus locations will cancel the glitch, so doing it at a chair other then the one in Sabitsuki's room would be wise. (Chair storage required for chairs other then the one in Sabitsukis room)

Make Sabitsuki invisible: Get chair storage. Sit in chair and equip arms effect. Enter bed after exiting the chair. Hold down shift, then press X while holding down shift.

Messed up movement glitch: Wake up in chair. Enter back into the dream. Activate invisible chair. Enter bed, hold down shift and press Z then X.

Steal the chair: Do the messed up movement glitch (description above) and after you exit the bed hold up, enter the chair, and hold down shift as you enter the chair. If done correctly you should now be moving with the chair, and the collision should be off.

Softlock .flow: Get chair storage and get caught by a kaibutsu

Get to Dying Girls event very easy: Preform walk through walls at the chair in the flesh walls. Walk across the gap to Dying Girls event.

Believe it or not there is still more, but these are the most noticeable and useful ones.

I don't know why, but despite .flow being my favorite fangame, theres ONE thing, that's so minor that always sets me off when i play Yume Nikki or Yume 2kki later.

The hair animation.
Sabitsuki doesn't have her hair twirl around when she walks, so even Yume Nikki looks infinitely more detailed just because of that, like, fuck.

Off-topic to the thread that's already nitpicky as heck, but, imagine if lol suddenly did a special "update" of .flow on Yume Nikki's 15th anniversary or some special date where he just polishes the game's sprite, sounds and visuals and possibly even events or update on the School's empty box which is lacking (which are kinda slightly lacking from the likes of 2kki) and, most importantly…
…unblocks that pillar blocking a enterway on the School.

Yume 2kki Glitch

So I've just found a glitch in yume 2kki.
To do it you have to be in Version 0.104g , and then go to the Monster's jaw in the forset world and interact with it with the oil drum effect equipped.
Now, when you do that hover the camera over the drum and press Z.
And then everything goes batshit, the textures in the monster's jaw gets corrupted and when you get out urotsuki will be lying down even when you try to move.

Windows 10 issues

Trying to get Yume 2kki to work on Windows 10
-I downloaded the japanese language pack just in case i'd need it
-I have the game extracted. There was a gibberish error for a bit.
-I installed Locale emulator as told. Got another error, only english words being RPG and 2000. Picture related.
-I installed 2000RTP. Having errors with that, after extracting.
-I'm sulking low in my chair, unable to wallow in fan-art and fan games.

Mong Jung Mong | Dream In Dream

So has anyone heard of this Korean fangame? It's pretty decent (and actually finished). It's got far more maps than most fangames, up to 400. There's about 27 effects, and most of them are required for something.

There's one effect in particular that is extremely useful for backtracking, especially when you get stuck in a dead end. I won't go into details so that you might enjoy it yourself.

The music and graphics are pretty hit or miss, though. Some areas have pretty nice tracks, others can get annoying after a while, but not nearly to the same level as Farewell's music.

It's been translated to English, too, so that's helpful for picking out effects.

Iter Itineris

Hey guys! I've watched this place, but I haven't posted anything until I get my game developed and into good condition (as in bugs that are in need to get fixed).

Here's Iter: Itineris. Iter , which is Latin for Journey, is a classic-styled Yume Nikki fangame without the repetitive 'doing to bed to enter the dreamworld' stuff. You play as Ava as you go into a rift that had appeared in her home to explore bizarre and strange places. The 'Effects' are called XenoVisions.

A new game?

I'm making a YN fangame, or at least I'm going to try, while I'm having a month off from work this summer. I started yesterday and I hope to finish it, or at least something playable, in a months time at most. It's gonna be a "pure" YN fangame, so the plan is to not do what alot of newer games (are they fangames?) do, with lots of story and all that jazz. Did anyone else not like Yume 2kki very much?

Everyone knows that Yume 2kki is often praised for being the biggest YN game, but to me there was to much random stuff that felt like it was just added in to make it bigger. Also I feel it's biggest downfall is that they had a lot of people working on it. This can be a good thing in some cases like programming, but having so many artists makes the art feel like it doesn't have a consistent art style like in Yume Nikki and even .flow. The art style is suppose to reflect the character and since there is no consistent art style I doesn't feel like the character. Don't get me wrong it isn't a bad game just not one of the better YN games. (Please don't stab me it is just my opinion)

.flow doesn't get past the intro sequence

So, I recently downloaded .flow, but when I opened it up and selected .flow on the title, the game went through the odd intro sequence with the static and all that… But then the game crashed. Abandoned Engine

I don't know very well how to explain this but bear with me
Four years ago I played Yume Nikki for the first time, and I enjoyed it quite a bit, at the same time I was really getting into programming and had become a full-time NEET
So I took my sweet free time and started cloning the RPG Maker engine onto the HTML5 Platform, my aim was to build an engine powerful enough so that It could run Yume Nikki flawlessly and possibly make it so a single instance could be played by a lot of people at the same time, so you could have the experience of bumping into other people as you play, with the possibilities of some minor interaction
Thing is, I'm lazy as hell and get depressed fairly easily, so the project didn't really ever get too far, biggest problem was that I couldn't build a disassembler to fetch all the vital data I need from the Yume Nikki inner code, and by that I mean general event handling, I also don't know the game well enough to clone it with the poor documentation it has, and by that I mean few strings of japanese scattered across it's RPGMaker file
The engine itself I was building, however, works fairly well, as it is it can mimic most rpg maker interactions fairly easily besides some graphical shenanigans, which weren't easy to handle at the time in HTML5, dunno if that has changed, most stuff works well like AI handling, Map building, visual layering, Event positioning and handling, memory management, Sound effects (Including, of course, the different sounds for different grounds), etc etc, it has some of the multiplayer aspect built in, but that's pretty much at 10%
Why I'm telling all this? Well, I didn't plan on going back to it, it's been untouched for years, and I don't even remember how it works right now, but recently there was a pretty good Yume Nikki thread on 4chan that got me a bit nostalgic, and honestly, it's a shame I could never got to do anything with it, reprogramming the entirety of Yume Nikki might be beyond my abilities, but even then, maybe I could work something out with it, maybe even a fangame, although my drawing skills are pretty much nonexistant
I don't really know what to do with this, but I'd really like to do something

The specialness of Yume Nikki

I have a complaint about some of these fan games: most of them seem to "try too hard" to emulate the weirdness/edginess of the first game. Some parts of the original Yume Nikki bothered me and seemed to try too hard in of themselves, but the game still stayed mysterious and a little creepy, but really most of all, atmospheric and lonely; depressing.

I feel like all and any fan games kind of miss the point of the original. The original was out of place, RPG-wise. It's not like any other game in that it doesn't follow conventional game logic. That was the cool thing - its uniqueness. The fan games lose that because they are all very similar to the original.

So besides getting more general gameplay from them that is similar, they miss what was good about Yume Nikki. If the fan games were as different from Yume Nikki as Yume Nikki was from regular RPG-style games, then they might have been interesting. But the point that I got from the original was that Madotsuki was mostly completely alone in the dream world. When you see it with a different character, all I feel is "Eh, yeah somebody's mimicking the style to try to create something similar again."

Can anybody sympathize with my views on this? I know this is the fan game section so I'm probably talking to a lot of people who disagree with me, but just give me your thoughts on it.

JanusVR Yume Nikki 3D Metaverse

So, I was exploring a game called JanusVR which transforms the internet in actual Physical places and it is pretty darn awesome (click here for more info: http://www.janusvr.com/) then suddenly I've found something on a room of "popular" sites that made me get pretty excited but also full of questions - an attempt to remake Yume Nikki in 3D made by one guy called Nakura. Unfortunally all I've got was this exact information about it (Pic Related) and I couldn't find any more further infromation on the internet… So… Any of you guys knows about this? As long as the Madotsuki sprite edits are relatively nice, I usually favor those over new sprites.

Yume Nikki 3d

Hello everyone. So, I've played Yume Nikki this summer and enjoyed it so much that I couldn't resist to make a fangame.

Yume Nikki 3d was made in a few days and instead of using RPG Maker, I used an old 3d engine from the 90's. The alpha version is short and may be completed in 20 mins or so. Your task is to find three keys in random locations and open the exit. All locations are connected by portals. For the most part I tried to create my own locations instead of copying ones from the original game, and only a few places have references to the original Yume Nikki.

nostAlgic is actually one of the most frequently updated fangames around, though I think it's sometimes somewhat a small update.

Hi, I'm a newcomer here but have lurked a small, teensy while. We (my dev partner in crime and I) have a game in the works that I believe is far enough along that it'd be worth sharing here.
To be frank, this started out as a fangame but veers further and further from that initial vision. I believe it shares an artistic vision with fangames in that we want to make the player explore and keep playing to see more of the game's visuals, but otherwise it may be more akin to something like Space Funeral for example. There is a traditional RPG system and focus on gameplay with more defined goals and minigames, and we've tried our hardest to make it actually fun and another reason to want to keep playing. If it doesn't fit here, I understand and apologize.
Without saying much more, we try to give this game an identity with the hand-drawn aesthetic and more focus on humor without resorting to being offensive or tasteless. There is also a far more concrete plot, but it is absent from this demo- which you can grab here:

Yume Nikki inspired 3D game

I'm currently developing a game in unity and wanted to ask help from this board in particular. I'm not quite yet ready to show anything yet (everything is in early stages at the moment you can only move and cycle through a test effect menu as well as use a few test effects) but I wanted to get feedback on certain things.

In a month or two I will present the more intricate details about this game, and its style.

Here are a few things that I've finished or am confidant in saying:

The game handles pretty much exactly as Yume Nikki handles.

The perspective is similar to the perspective in RPG maker simply in 3D. This gives a bit more freedom in regards to camera angles.

The Effects menu is now a small scrolling set of items which can be cycled using "Q" and "E" alternatively if you're using the YN control scheme you can cycle through the menu using "A" and "D".

When all of the visual GUI components are completed, the menu will present itself visually as a thought bubble above the player's head. There, three items are shown, the Effect you're currently using, the effect before it and the effect after it. The menu will endlessly cycle and is smoothly animated. You can confirm your choice using the "spacebar" or "enter" keys or simply close the menu.

I'm trying to remove most screen covering menus with alternatives like that to make everything feel a bit more natural.

At the start of this thread I'll only be passing various game mechanics and concepts to you guys for some feedback, as it progresses I'll be showing you some art, and music assets too.

General design discussion, because there should be one (but really it's because I could use the advice).

1. What kind of music do you prefer? YN style, where it is either ambiance or very short loops, or an actual soundtrack (which would make the game's filesize shoot up)?

2. What ratio of doors in the nexus to total number of dream world in the game is best? Say a game has 20 different dream worlds, and the nexus has 12 doors, that means only 40% of the games areas you have to find by exploring. But if it was a ratio of 20 worlds to 5 doors, plenty of the game would be explorable but the nexus wouldn't have very many doors. What ratio do you prefer?

3. Would it turn many people off if the ending wasn't very ambiguous, thus leaving little room for speculation and theorizing? It's definitely part of YN's appeal, but would most of you like it if this rule was broken?

Original Fangames?

A debate from >>10304 sparked my interest, so I'm making a thread for it. How far do you think a fangame can stray from the original formula of Yume Nikki before it stops being a fangame?

There are traditional games like .flow and 2kki that are great in their own right, and then games like Fleshchild and Hell Diary that are also nice, but have lots of original content.

Hell Diary for one confused me quite a bit, since I didn't think it could be classified as a fangame. How far do you think a dev can take their game before it's no longer a fangame?

The Other Line

The Other Line is a fangame that I've been working on for some time. In this game, you enter the "dream world" through your telephone and save by making markings in your wall. The game focuses mostly on pure exploration. There are effects to collect, but they're mostly just to either help you explore more of the "dream world" or just for fun/cosmetics. (The "goal" of the game, or rather, what you have to do to get the ending, has not been decided as of version .05, but more than likely the effects will tie into it somehow)

[New] Official Dream vs Dream thread

Hi guys, here's a thread for DvD where you can talk/complain/debate/whine etc. about the game as well as its progress, its spinoffs (see: 4/01), and some other stuff.

I'm a skeleton/budding sprite animator, so I can pretty much tell you that the progress is heavy on sprite animation. At the moment we're working on Urotsuki primarily. God bless this goddamn walk cycle and god bless Pico.

Dog's Day

Okay, on the Fangame Me, I popped up this minigame (Dog's Day) and loved it because it was so intentionally awful. It's my favorite minigame out of any other fangame.
So, the first time I booted it up, I beat it. I died a few times, but I beat it after like five deaths.
And now? I have no idea how to beat it.

Starting Out tips

Hello /fg/

I found Uboachan a year ago and posted a few things here on making my own fangame. I've been a huge fan of Osamu Sato works and Yume Nikki for the longest time, and I've always wanted to try my hand at making a "fangame", even though I don't think I would stay very true to the original Yume Nikki- I like to make it my own thing.

A year later, I'm still in on the idea. I have entire levels planned out meticulously in my head, I have ideas on characters and how I want to spin it around how I've felt in the past few years. But the problem is getting it out on paper. I feel like I have "Blank Slate" syndrome, where I just end up staring at the default RPG-XP graphics staring back at me and don't know what the hell to do as everything circles around me. I'm not a good sprite artist and I can't make good music (But I could get somebody to do it but probably only if they knew I was going to finish the project) and with generic RPG city tunes and the default player sprite walking around bright grassy fields I can never get in the mood to actually START my project. I've taken a break to do university stuff and learn how to draw as it's a skill I've always wanted to have, but it's always been nudging me in the back of my mind day by day.

Does anyone have any tips for somebody starting out? Ways to keep inspired, ways to get into the mood, ways to start from a blank slate and push yourself forward until you really get in the groove of developing?

Hey guys, I've been working on this game for a few months now and am closed to putting out a beta.

The game is called NDE, an arpg that focuses on dreamlike alternate-realities and dungeon/puzzles.

Since at this point I am basically just creating content, I thought i would post sort of a devlog thread (if thats allowed, the rules said "considerable developmental progress") to get some feedback on the levels and such.

The main character is Charmaine ( a play on main-char), a scientist searching for her co-worker after an experiment went haywire. Using newly developed technology, you are able to switch between realities to find him.

Not entirely sure where else to post this but-

I played Yume Nikki for the first time maybe two weeks ago. I love it quite abit.
For the last week or so I've been putting a considerable amount of thought into making a Fangame of sorts, based on my own mind, experiences, dreams and other oddities of my own. Of course, my past, thoughts, etc will be slightly bizarreified to fit the YN theme.
I also put in some real effort to make some sprites for it. Although I'm a programmers and I've worked on many games, this is the first time I've actually went out of my comfort zone and went ahead with making my own sprites. Because YN's sprites were quite odd and some of them were 'simple', I figured I could get away with having simpleish sprites as well.
Pic related, it's unfinished and kinda bland though, as it's unfinished. Any of you can use it if you want to though, think of it as a contribution here.

In any case, I finally found this site. I then found this subforum and I feel a little discouraged.
Apparently everyone and their mothers have made a YN 'fangame'. So I'm not entirely sure if I should even bother continuing work/planning my own out. I wasn't aware YN fangames were a thing, as I'm new to the community. I was simply hoping to work on mine and having a smallish community enjoy it, although now since fangames of nearly type exist, I'm worried about living up to a expectation and that isn't as fun for me anymore.

However, in case I do decide to keep going, I wanted to ask you folks a few things:
Although there are so many fangames out there, what makes .flow and 2kki special exactly?
Keep in mind I haven't played them myself(I will though sometime) nor have I played any other fangames, so my knowledge on this is limited, hince why I'm asking.
.flow and 2kki seems to get more recongnition alongside the original Yume Nikki. An example of this is alot of fanart depict 2kki, .flow and YN together. Or, even here in Uboachan, the two have their own subforums.
So, again, what makes those two special out of the box of fangames?

And the second question:
What would you personally like to see in a fangame? Or what would you 'not' like to see? Either way.

Hey, I've been working on this fangame for about a month, I'm working on my first world and it's almost done (there's a maze in the first world so most of my time has gone to that) It's at a very early stage but I've already come up with a story for it. Though I won't tell unless you ask, and if you do I won't tell a lot because it would give things away and ruin the fun.

It has a dark ish atmosphere and has lots of random blood slotches everywhere.

I did almost all of the pixeling and music. I got most of the sound effects from freesound.org. Me and my friend also recorded the scream and laughing sounds.

Any opinions/ideas? Does anyone want to volunteer to help with the music or pixeling? (Though it's okay if nobody wants to) :)

Transitioning between worlds

I've been thinking about this for a while now, and I'd like it if developers could chime in: how should transitions between different worlds be handled?

I think personally there have to be visual cues that the player can learn in order to recognise that a certain door/warp/whatever will lead to a specific area.

I think I'd actually also go further and say that transitions should make some amount of sense, so that how worlds are connected tell a story in itself.

With a development cycle nearing two years my game project is finally nearing its completion. With a hopeful release planned for April now seemed an auspicious time to announce the game.

Titled 'Middens', the game is styled towards open ended exploration of a surreal sensibility. A formal battle system in a likeness to traditional RPGs is employed alongside a "knife effect" system making for diverse creature interactions. Some of the game denizens require a formal duel while others can be destroyed on the general map, whereas others are completely peaceful.

General Info:

Middens takes the perspective of an ambiguous drifter traversing a veritable x-zone. Roving its interminable wastes the nomad chances upon
a sentient revolver beside an ominous pile of remains.
The pistol offers its exploit in exchange for a pledge of inextricable compansionship.
Espousing to be the player's conscience the dubious weapon directs the drifter to a nearby outpost wherein the story further unfolds.

Despite its appearance as a wasteland the rift is home to many strange denizens–
some volatile and others ineffectual. Whatever their disposition the pistol represents the choice to engage them or to spare them. Offense and passivity
both have their appropriate times with rewards and consequences
being granted to both paths respectively.
I have created a Tumblr dedicated to the game that exhibits screens, concept art, original music and will eventually house the download.

No De I Cide thread? We fix this now. This is a unique fangame, made by someone called Izuriha, using lots of holy/demon imagery and gore. The music choice is interesting, it's a mixture of metal and seemingly trance tracks. The protagonist, Inahoozuki seems to be a demon child, according to her description.

It's come to my attention that some Yume Nikki fan game authors don't want certain gameplay videos posted online. Let's continue to respect their wishes.

And it's probably not a good idea to monetize videos of those games on YouTube either. They are free games and we really shouldn't be making any money off of their efforts.

LcdDem (レクヅデム): No gameplay videos at all. They must either be
set to private or deleted.
Lemegeton (or "Remegeton") (レメゲトン): No Let's Play videos. Live streaming is OK.
Muyuu (ムユウ): No gameplay videos at all.
Page 13 (13ペイジ): No Let's Play videos, whether they have voice or subtitle commentary. Other gameplay videos (such as silent longplays) are OK.
sickmind: No gameplay videos of pre-Remake versions
Yume Nisshi (夢日誌): No voice commentary allowed in videos of version 0.3 or later. Subtitles are OK.

So let's be careful. Japanese game developers aren't quite as keen on people posting gameplay videos online as Western ones are.

Thing is, I'd really like something dark and unsettling like .flow or Me, but the wiki hasn't been really helpful.
The more it stays true to the original formula, the better. I don't mind a couple dialogues, but that's not really what I'm looking for.

This is the official thread for Someday v0.00. This version is just a look into how the game is supposed to be - five effects and 12 worlds (no deeper locations at the moment) waiting for you!

You play as Itsuki (樹, lit. tree but also can be rendered as いつき), a boy who is trapped in a low-budget apartment because of a typhoon. Instead of a balcony you have a window, and interacting with your bed grants you access to the dream world. Press 9 to cover your eyes and wake up. You can save using the computer. Enjoy this humble 0.00!

Note: The worlds, music and sounds may vary in later versions of the game.

I'm not certain if this is a fangame or not, but recently I've run into an RPG maker game called Ib. Apparently there's a lot of fan art of Ib and Yume Nikki together, but since I am in the middle of reinstalling my operating system, I have not yet had the chance to play it. so i didnt see a topic about this fangame and i have so many questions about it

Debris follows an idiot (literally, theres a thing that says "BAKA" by his name) named Tatsuki. he explores his dreams and stuff. uh, it's pretty basic. but what bugs the shit out of me here is that i can't find out anything about it. can someone fill me the fuck in? i love it and all (its pretty up there in terms of how much i like it) but i have no idea what the hell is going on

there are even endings implemented but it doesn't seem you can get to them in-game. really what i want to know about is the princess or something that's in it?

Hi, forgive me if this is the wrong place to post about this game. It is pretty fun and a bit different for a YNFG. It has RPG-like status and you have to battle symbol (effect?) holders to get the symbols. There's eight, as well as some good ol' endings. The game is not short, though and the difficulty is hard at the start.
