How has anime/nip stuff changed your personality? What were you like after you really got into it compared to before?

In elementary school I probably spent more time in the office than in class. I almost compulsively did stuff to tick the teacher off and she wasn't actually that great considering how poorly she dealt with me. Around middle school I started watching typical slice of life crap. I started comparing myself to the characters. They were polite, courteous and thoughtful. They just seemed better than me, so I started trying to emulate them. It wasn't an immediate change, but I grew to be a lot more respectful of adults and in control of myself. It sort of put me on a better path. I did also start noticing how much more freedom characters seemed to have compared to me in my suburban environment, which i'm still kind of bitter about, but I wouldn't consider getting more perspective a bad thing.

Otherside Picnic

Has anyone watched this show? Strong Yume Nikki vibes here. The protagonists are able to cross over to and explore a surreal, dreamlike, and very dangerous parallel world. The settings and atmosphere are spooky and delicious. I don't find shows that vibe me this way very often, highly recommend it.

Parents and anime

Today I was ordering a wig for cosplay, and mom ended up picking out a wig for herself because the "thought it would be fun to wear it out sometimes". It was just a simple brown bob-style wig, but I think mom might be a closet cosplayer.

So, do any of you guys have any experiences to share of sharing anime with your parents or other family members? do hey like it at all or is it more "you watching yer chinese girl cartoons again son?"
I've shown my mom every miyazaki movie and lots of other anime films, she's a pretty big fan. On the other hand, my dad is all "miyazaki? I thought we bombed that place"
My one older brother used to be a DBZ fan, now the only anime he can stomach is Akira.

Recently I've started to actually learn Japanese and contemplate moving there once I mastered the language, already had knowledge in an area of specialty, and professional experience so that I could actually be a useful member of society there. It's clean, the trains are quiet and on time, there no, "urban youths", to tolerate if you catch my drift. I'm starting uni next fall, so that's a long ways off. This is sort of like a cross-roads in my life where any kind of future seems like a realistic possibility. However, as I did more research I became painfully aware of the elephant in the room: foreigners are not accepted and have no defined role in Japanese society. Let me preface this by stating 2 things. 1.This post is not intended to be political. 2.I'm not one of those morons who think Japan should be shamed into adopting Europe's retarded approach to letting in outsiders.

Before this point, I thought problems people who went there had could mostly be attributed to their lack of understanding the social etiquette. Of course some loud idiot would stand out and be rejected. I figured a person who did the work involved to fully understand the language and the ins and outs of social interaction would be just fine, but that't not what I found. There's a lot to unravel, so i'll start with the biggest thing that struck me, housing discrimination. The way I see it, I don't care how hard it is to get in. I don't care if they don't let anybody in at all. They could make people pass Kanken 1, however, doesn't a person who does get in, who does meet the requirements, deserve the ability to get something as basic as housing? Shouldn't something as essential as that be guaranteed? If they just want some South Korean temp laborers, fine, but what I see is a sort of half-assed acceptance. Would other countries really be so pissed if they didn't let in anybody? Is it just to appease the, "international community"? There's probably similar stuff involving health care or other such things, but I don't know much about that and you get the idea.

From what I've read, the way you're perceived as a foreigner is very binary. Either people will be hostile towards you, or more likely they'll treat you like some kind of attraction. There's no third option. Doesn't matter how long you've been there, or how well-adjusted you try to be, there's no third option(recognition). I suppose physical attraction plays a role in which of the two categories you get placed in(ugly idiot, exotic beauty). It seems contradictory that a society so focused on social intricacies, doesn't seem to understand this. Does the concept of condescension exist there? People make the argument that being doted on and given attention is a nice thing, but when I see people say that I think about the people who actually try to live there. I started thinking that this might less of an issue in non-urban places, as naturally a tourist is less likely to go to the countryside, so a foreigner there is probably a permanent resident, right? Except I also imagine you would get more of a negative reaction in less populated places. They're less used to bologna skins and don't feel the same societal obligation to, "make a good impression". If i'm wrong about that, please tell me.

Maga or Anime

Which do you prefer? I actually like watching anime more. With a book you get total freedom to imagine things the way you like and with animation there's a lot for your senses to chew on. Manga is in that mid-ground where you don't have as much freedom or stimulus. Even visual novels are better since they have sound and color. Also, I like binging through stuff all at once. With an anime, you only have to wait a couple months to do that, but manga that's currently being published could take years to finish.
In manga's favor, it's sometimes better at actual story telling since nothing's cut and individual panels can have a lot more detail on them. I also get that anime basically works like an advertisement for its source material, but it's still not hard for me to pick between one or the other.

Hello, I'm the translator of Patchy Illusion Team (a scanlation group composed of people from uboachan), and I've got some news. Although we've been translating Yume Nikki Doujinshi for a good while, we also started picking up other doujins that have been off the radar. As of now, we've got a few MOTHER3 books, please check them out:

Is learning readings worth it?

I've recently begun climbing the mountain that is the Japanese language. I've learned all the radicals and now i'm ready to get into Kanji. I'm not going to be using mnemonic decives because they seem contrived and annoying. I have enough free time to just use the paper, write over and over again method and that woked perfectly well for radicals. 20 a day that way seems doable. I don't plan on learning stroke order and I don't think i'll need it for my purposes. That's all well and good, but I don't know whether learning the Onyomi and Kunyomi readings is worth it or not. There's a lot of mixed signals from what people say online. Some say I can just learn vocab and take, "mental note", of how the kanji are pronounced, others say it's necessary to learn them to guess how to pronounce things. I'd like to be able to know how something is pronounced just by reading it, but I don't know how important that it. You've got to help me, ubuu.

What, were you born after 1976 and think you have an opinion? Haha, you baby cunt little twerp fuck off GTFO out of here with your baggy Naruto headband you Funimation fapping little bitch. How about you watch to some of your favorite moeshits like Strike Witches and Cardcaptor Sakura and eat pocky and write poems to your waifu. Haha, who cares? You think you're all manly and cool because you all just hit puberty in your 20's and can grow these red wispy bullshit grayless beards on your pizza-cratered little baby faces and you revere streaming, steaming trash like .hack as if it were the classics. You wouldn't know a classic unless Coca-Cola printed it on the bottle I want to break on your eyes and slash your throat with you impossible nerd. Feeling overwhelmed

I was really excited about anime a year ago but that excitement seems to have ebbed. The last anime I got all the way through was Eva, and that was quite awhile ago. After that I started Serial Experiments Lain but my computer's fan died before I got all the way through it and by the time I got a new one I'd lost the interest the series built in me during the time I watched it. I know I'd love it but I don't know if I'll actually enjoy watching the rest of it now. Awhile after that I read a few manga series and they were enjoyable but they didn't do much to arouse serious interest in reading a lot of others.

It's like that with a lot of things for some reason, there are a lot of books I own I haven't gotten through simply because I stopped halfway through them to read something else or lost interest, and a lot of them are ones I know I'd like. I'm not sure what anime to watch, because the ones that sound really appealing are ones I usually get halfway through the first episode of and then either get bored or feel obligated to get through, which paradoxically kills my desire to watch the rest.

Are there many anime series which are interesting enough to grip you from the beginning? If so I'd appreciate hearing what they are.

I need to conduct a questionnaire for JPN202 for a project and I figured finding a Japanese text board to ask for help would be a good idea.

If there's been a thread posted similar to this in any way, sorry! I'm just not sure if there has been because most everything on this board at first glance is discussion of anime or games or music or something.

Onsen General

My body is sore after some relatively intense physical activity over the past couple of days, and I was thinking how nice it would be to spend some time in a hot spring bath. I remember soaking in a few different hot springs in the western north america, mostly around the Idaho/ Wyoming/Northern Utah area, but also a couple around Banff, ALberta, but I haven't been in one in ages. With all of my weeby inclinations, I found myself wondering what traditional Japanese baths are like. I think the tradition is much older. I can imagine that original inhabitants of the Americas may have also had a hot spring bath tradition, but it seems like white people run most of them in the states these days. But yeah, I know next to nothing about onsen. If anybody has any info or better yet, stories, I'm all ears.

Your Ideal Anime Adaptation

I've been meaning to make a thread for people to describe their dream anime adaptations. Like, pick an existing property, franchise, book, whatever, and say what anime studio or director you'd like to see make a show out of it, or just how you think an anime of it could be done.
Conversely, you can discuss how you'd like to see an existing anime translated into another medium, like a game or a live-acion movie (although those usually suck).
It's fun, mindless brainstorming. I think about this stuff to pass time while I'm at my job. I work at a children's library, and I like to imagine how anime can be made of the books there. It's fun, trust me! It really is! (´・ω・`) I hope.

Let's me start with one of my ideas!
I really think a comedy anime of the children's book series Amelia Badelia would be great if it was made by studio KyoAni, with the same people who made K-On, Hyoka, Nichijou, Chunibyo, ect. The books are about an airheaded young maid who takes everything too literally, which leads to WACKY HIJINKS. Like, someone tells her to draw the curtains (as in pull them back), and she sits down and draws a picture of them. Tell her there's a fork in the road and she's all "Oh my I hope I don't drive over it and pop a tire!". Amelia Badelia reminds me a bit of Yui from K-on, but less lazy with more work-ethic, yet somehow manages to screw up more.
KyoAni is probably the only studio who could possibly make an anime about a maid and not have it be creepy. Well, at least based on their recent endeavors.

So! Let's hear YOUR ideas! Do you want a Miyazaki version of LOTR or a BONES adaptation of Metal Gear Solid? Or, for the otehr side of the coin, do you think Tim Burton could make a good movie out of Soul Eater? Do you think he would do it live-action (which would star Johnny depp and suck) or stop-motion animation (and possibly still star Johnny depp and possibly not suck)?
Tell us about it! Go nuts!

Nama-Sensei and Learning Japanese With Anonymous

So, a long time ago, I came across a really nice comprehensive guide to learning Japanese, straight from the Internet Hate Machine itself:

learningjapanesewithanonymous.blogspot.com/2011/07/introduction.html?m=0

Among the steps, the first thing he recommends is watching an alcohol-driven video series by a 20-something dude calling himself "Nama-Sensei". Nama-Sensei is vulgar as hell and not 100% accurate, but his videos are a fantastic starting point to learning Japanese. Even if you're not serious about learning moonrunes, they're an entertaining watch.
