It took me a few years to finish Yume Nikki, playing it on and off, and finishing it felt so good probably because I did it on my own. Recently I finished .flow while looking stuff up constantly on the wiki, and I 100% regret doing that. The experience was much diluted, and I didn't get to spend as much time with the game as I wanted. I regret it because I think the appeal of Yume Nikki and its fangames is being lost all the time, not knowing where tf you are, but also being comfortable with that feeling, and slowly (emphasis on slowly) figuring out the world around you. I love that, but at the same time, there's no right way to play the game. If you're having fun, that's all that matters.
>I spent around 5hrs trying to find the others and ended up finding 1 of them
That's the fun part for me honestly. Because yeah, you do spend a considerable amount of time looking for a single effect, but at the same time you're learning and memorizing the layout of every world you come across. I guess if the game has stupidly hard to find effects, then it's just a case of bad game design, and not necessarily your fault. Can't recall any of those in Yume Nikki though.
In my opinion, Yume Nikki is not the kind of game that you just finish. You sit with it, think about it, reflect on it, theorize on what each world, NPC and effect means, maybe for days or weeks on end. It's a big puzzle, and big puzzles require time to be solved. But again, don't let me dictate how you should play the game.

Towel effect is bullshit, one NPC in a giant looping area which itself already leads you to another effect
The ghost running away from you is stupid design and it can even hide itself behind the walls
Also fc world is fucking stupid, you get one random npc teleporting you to a place with an effect, if you dont already know one of them might do that youll never see it

>>10781I actually found the towel effect pretty easily. What did mess me up was the fc house and other maze dreams

>>10780yeah I agree with you. Yume Nikki is a game where you have to take your time with. I did write down notes for myself when playing to memorize the dream layouts, and where I've been which was fun in itself

I have to agree with the towel, it was the hardest effect for me by far somwho

Christ, I almost wish the fangames never existed thinking back to the original
It does everything right, it almost feels like the fangames just find multiple different ways to make things work less, be less effective
