The Steam version is serviceable enough. But it does have a couple bugs that were never fixed, like the lights on the spaceship not working as intended.
I would personally recommend just downloading the version hosted here instead. You can find it under the [2007 Classic v0.10] link on the sidebar.

I completed the Steam version, and it works. But the only small weird issue is that saving your progress makes the game goes to like 1 FPS for a moment, but besides of that is perfectly fine.

I was reading the readme of the portable version and it has me wondering if it was really the same as the 2007 Classic, since its extra readme is not present there.

The portable version is more updated. The installer version has more bugs. The portable still has a few of course, but less than Steam.

I'm playing the steam version and it's fine, I just learned that it doesn't have some bug fixes but honestly I like tracking my game time on steam and have this game show up in my profile. I like the social aspects of steam. I like steam. I like. To be honest. tbqdesu.

Yeah, the steam version is fine and serviceable. Does what it needs to do, which is all I ask of a free port. The save animation and Nexus door open animations randomly going to 1 fps is annoying is hell but ultimately harmless.

use the one on the sidebar in uboachan. steam version has mediocre translation

I enjoy the steam version. It works natively on my steam deck and is comfy and i like it.

The descriptions are overall better and stuff like Kitchen Knife is more accurate but it also fucks up by translating youkai names like Yuki-onna and Nopperabou directly to english which is really jarring considering it doesn't translate Oni(which funnily enough the fantranslation butchers by translating it to Demon)
Eye Palm isn't an accurate translation of Medamaude(Eyeball Arm) and Buyo Buyo is a japanese onomatopeia that feels weird to translate when nobody calls Kyukkyu-kun "Squeak-Squeak Guy".
Also probably worth pointing out the "unofficial" english fantranslation everyone knows was made in ubuu
