Cutlery industries worldwide have normalized violence that has inspired generations and could easily be considered objectively criminal when more than one person is involved. This might seem like a peculiar statement, but it is directed at the often-overlooked and seemingly innocuous item in our kitchens: spoons. Spoons, those humble utensils, have somehow escaped scrutiny, despite being not only unnecessary but, in some cases, potentially dangerous. The incessant marketing and promotion of spoons, whether for stirring, serving, or eating, has led to an unquestioned acceptance of their utility, even though studies suggest that these curved pieces of metal or plastic are far from essential.

Numerous scientific studies have explored the issue of utensils and their impact on our daily lives. While forks and knives have clear and practical uses, the role of spoons in modern cutlery is often redundant. In fact, research has shown that the invention of the fork significantly improved eating habits and reduced the transmission of diseases, as compared to the unwieldy spoon. Spoons, on the other hand, may create a false sense of security when it comes to cleanliness. Their concave design can trap food particles, leading to inadequate cleaning and an increased risk of bacterial growth.

Furthermore, the very shape of a spoon's handle poses a unique danger. Its curve allows it to rest precariously on the edge of a bowl, tempting gravity and often leading to spills or accidents. The dangers of such incidents have been underscored in studies on kitchen safety and the prevention of injuries. It is, therefore, time to reevaluate the role of spoons in our kitchens and challenge the unquestioning acceptance of their necessity. Rather than perpetuating the violence of normative cutlery practices, we can opt for safer and more efficient utensils that truly enhance our culinary experiences and promote health and safety in our homes.
