Nifflas is usually pretty good about not having cliche art styles in his games.

…So, anyone have any good suggestions far as fan-made levels go? I'd especially be interested in any that're kinda Yume Nikki-ish, or something somewhat creepy and/or bizarre in general.

I've only played the main game and 1 or 2 fan levels, so I don't really have any to suggest, myself.

There's a few creepy YN style levels out there. Try "It waits" and Paranoia.

The best custom levels IMO are "A walk in the night" and Gaia. Both are about as high quality as Nifflas's stuff. Oh, and don't eat the mushroom. Guess that one is pretty YNish. xD

Saira isn't really as good as Knytt Stories.

The graphics are gorgeous, there's lots of neat stuff in the game, but… the puzzles. Most of them aren't fun, they're just there to prolong the length of the game and make it feel bigger than it really is. Cracking codes gets in the way of exploring the cool worlds.

Au Sable is a dark, slightly frightening freeware game made with Gamemaker. Shooter and platform elements take precedence, with little to no real exploration. It's eerie soundtrack and surreal imagery brought Yume Nikki to my mind right away. Don't let it's seeming glitches fool you, it's all part of the game. I highly suggest reading the txt file that comes with it, because the tutorial's pretty rudimentary.
